Sister? Oh brother!

It would seem that despite the traditional values that the health service still carries in this twenty first century, there is finally some progress being made in equality! There may still be a vast majority of nurses who are female and yet more men in senior positions than women within health but I have discovered today that despite the ranking system of many a year, I can formally address myself as 'Ward Sister', even as a man, when I take up post in a few weeks time. Previously, women were Sister, men were Charge Nurse. I have always found this to be less than straight forward as a lot of the general public thought that any male nurse was a 'Charge Nurse' despite Charlie Fairhead spearheading his fifteen year campaign for recognition of the role in the BBC's Casualty!?

So, is this political correctness gone mad or an actual sensible attempt at trying to make things simple for patients and visitors? Well, probably neither! In this age of equality, I suspect that denying the title 'Ward Sister' to a man could be seen as sexist! No hospital wants that label!

I shall update my name badge on Monday!

Sticking with the health theme...

I'm sure anything they could confess, I could confess better! And finally, aren't microbes cute!? Jxx
