Reading, Watching, Hearing Oct 2007!
OK, here's a run-down of what I've been reading, listening to and going goggle eyed over for the past few months...
The Trouble Boy by Tom Dolby was a fair ol' read. Nothing earth shattering but enough to maintain interest and unusually, the ook contained 'discussion questions' at the end to ponder over alone or in a book group I suppose? The story itself follows the traditional gay world of New York, drink, drugs and sex with a minimal amount of difference to other gay novels to make it worth mentioning. I do get a little bored of the same format repeatedly though, as in my current read, the Boston Boys Club by Johnny Diaz. It seems Latino's in Miami & Boston have the same lives as those in New York!
Also set in Miami was My Worst Date by David Leddick. (Link to fancy website!) Although something a bit different, the whole thing felt a little morally questionable, being based around a son & mother dating the same guy. The other characters featured also all had dark backgrounds, often including cases of father / son abuse or some such, making me question the authors intent in writing so much on the edges of incest. Different but ultimately not one to rave about.
Last Summer by Michael Thomas Ford thankfully ticks more of my boxes. The second novel by this author I've read (also have 'Looking for It') follows the lives of a number of folk with a more interesting tale to tell about each. Their lives do intertwine a little but it's not forced or over complicated. Yes, sometimes predictable but generally a relaxing read, I'll look forward to more by this guy.
Finally in literature, a jump outside of my comfort zone. A friend (*waves at Pat*) has set me off on the first of Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter Novels. Now, I'm a good third of the way through this book and can't quite get my head switched away from the idea that this is just a vampire based Mills and Boon... It's certainly colourfully sexual in most of the content, without any actual sex taking place yet. I'm willing to see how things pan out as behind all the eroticism and romance there's actually an interesting story developing.
In music, I'm mostly listening to Darren Hayes latest amazing album! There are a great many notably brilliant tracks throughout the double album, though picking out just one that blows me away every time, How to Build a Time Machine is well worth every penny paid for this album! Buy it!
Also listening to the second Battlestar Galactica Soundtrack album which is also great. It really makes a difference when there's an effort to score music specifically for a show, rather than using music already out there to enhance the scenes! The music from Battlestar is dark but not depressing.
Ivri Lider & Bodies Without Organs are new discoveries. The former being an Israeli singer, the latter Swedish popsters. Ivri Lider you may recall I mentioned in a previous post when I showed the English & Hebrew versions of 'Bo' ('Let's'). I've also been enjoying a few other pieces of his, recorded to MP3 from the YouTube video's, especially 'Jesse'. His attempt at breaking the US market! I have every intention of buying an album or two come next payday...
Bodies without Organs are a Swedish band incorporating one significant member of Army Of Lovers my all time favourite pop/dance group! Alexander Bard has carried Obsession from Army through to Bodies and whilst my initial reaction at this song being sung by someone else was horror, I must admit, they do it very well and an album of theirs is currently winging it's way to me from Australia! (Import only!)
I was going to write loads about telly here but I'm sadly running out of time so I'll simply list the best shows on TV right now and simply say - WATCH!
Heroes & Ugly Betty!
Nuff said! Jxx
Bugging your brain like a stone in your shoe!
